Chelsea away to Swansea ~ Match Preview

Chelsea enjoyed a 4-1 win back in September, but will be expecting a much closer game this time round at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea have been a different team when playing on their own pitch so far this season, picking up 20 of their 27 points total at home. Manchester United are the only away side to beat them in South Wales so far, while Arsenal were the most recent visitors and went home empty-handed.

I commentated on the game for MOTD2 and felt Swansea merited the 3-2 victory. Not many teams pass rings around Arsene Wenger's players but - at times - that's exactly what happened.

I'm expecting a good game of football, but it might be a fairly tight one. Swansea have conceded only six goals at home all season, while Chelsea appear to have improved defensively just lately. Saturday's 1-0 win at QPR in the FA Cup was their fourth clean sheet in a row, and they are unbeaten in their last half dozen away games.

I had wondered whether Didier Drogba's absence at the Africa Cup of Nations would be just what Fernando Torres needed to jump back onto centre stage at the head of Chelsea's attack, but we've yet to really see it. He hasn't scored since the Champions League game against Genk in the middle of October - and has since appeared in 16 matches for the club without scoring. Incidentally, his last goal in the Premier League came in the reverse fixture against Swansea in September, but it wasn't all smiles that day either as he was given a straight red card for going in with both feet. Torres will be worth watching but don't forget Danny Graham at the other end for Swansea, who's scored on four of his last six starts at home - including the winner against Arsenal.

    Head-to-head

  • This is the first top-flight meeting between the teams in Wales and Chelsea's debut appearance at the Liberty Stadium.

  • In nine previous trips to Swansea, the Blues have managed just two victories.

  • This is the 21st meeting between the sides. Swansea have won five times, Chelsea nine and there have been six draws.

  • Swansea

  • Twenty of their 23 league goals have been scored by Englishmen - only Chelsea (22) and Manchester United (27) have more.

  • Ashley Williams's 121 touches in Swansea's match with Sunderland was the most by any player in the last round of Premier League matches.

  • Swansea have lost just once at home this season, picking up 20 of their 26 points at the Liberty Stadium.

  • Chelsea
    Aston Villa

  • Fernando Torres has now failed to score in his last 17 games for club and country, a total of over 15 hours of football. His last league goal came against Swansea on 24 September.

  • Last weekend, Chelsea failed to score for only the third time this season. The last two opponents that they didn't score against were, like Swansea, promoted clubs in QPR and Norwich.

  • Chelsea are three points better off than at the same stage last season (41 points v 38).

  • Frank Lampard's last four league goals have been match-winners
